第3章 Acknowledgments

I first wish to express my thanks to my wonderful wife, Linda, who, while writing her own book, has encouraged me, served as my coach, offered recollections from her own work experiences at Federal Express, and supported my efforts throughout this process.

Special thanks go to those who gave so willingly of their time to share their personal recollections and insights during the interviews, including Michael Basch, Charles Brandon, Nathaniel Breed, Michael Fitzgerald, Joseph Hinson, Charles Lewis Lea, John Tucker Morse, Debra Mouton, Dennis Sweeney, Leon Tyree, Theodore Weise, and Peter Willmott. Thanks also to those who are so much a part of this story and who, except for their untimely deaths, would have contributed their personal remembrances: Arthur Bass, John Vincent Fagan, and James Riedmeyer.

I also express my appreciation to Justine and Michael Toms of New Dimensions World Broadcasting Network, who saw merit in my early work, and Steve Piersanti of Berrett-Koehler Publishers, who made instrumental suggestions throughout the early editorial process. I want to acknowledge the tremendous contributions made by my content editor, Valerie Andrews, who guided me through the process of turning rambling recollections into prose worthy of this incredible story.

Finally, I want to thank Kathy Oddenino, whose inspired teachings have reminded me of the importance of "knowing thyself," the many friends and associates who have encouraged me to write this book, and Fred Smith for making it possible.

    The Wheel Spins

Best known as the basis for Alfred HItchcock's classic film The Lady Vanishes, Ethel White's book The Wheel Spins is a gripping and accomplished work in its own right. The plot is deceptively simple and the premise is classic: a woman meets a mysterious stranger during a long railway journey. It's easy to see in this novel what Hitchcock found so compelling and so well-suited to his particular brand of filmmaking.

    The Signal-Man 信号员(英文版)

The ghost story "The Signal-Man" is written in 1866, which concerns a spectre seen beside a tunnel entrance. The signal-man of the title tells the narrator of a ghost that has been haunting him. Each spectral appearance precedes, and is a harbinger of, a tragic event on the railway on which the signalman works. The signalman's work is at a signalbox in a deep cutting near a tunnel entrance on a lonely stretch of the line, and he controls the movements of passing trains. When there is danger, his fellow signalmen alert him via telegraph and alarms. Three times, he receives phantom warnings of danger when his bell rings in a fashion that only he can hear. Each warning is followed by the appearance of the spectre, and then by a terrible accident. The first accident involves a terrible collision between two trains in the tunnel. Dickens may have based this incident on the Clayton Tunnel rail crash that occurred in 1861.
