In 2007 Harvard commencements speech

Bill Gates]

I want to thank Harvard for this timelyhonor. Ill be changing my job next year …and it will be nice to finally have a collegedegree on my resume.

One of my biggest memories ofHarvard came in January 1975, whenI made a call from Currier House to acompany in Albuquerque that had begunmaking the worlds first personal computers. I offered to sell them software.

I worried that they would realize Iwas just a student in a dorm and hangup on me. Instead they said: “Were notquite ready, come see us in a month,”which was a good thing, because wehadnt written the software yet. Fromthat moment, I worked day and night onthis little extra credit project that markedthe end of my college education and thebeginning of a remarkable journey withMicrosoft.

What I remember aboveall about Harvard was being inthe midst of so much energyand intelligence. It could beexhilarating, intimidating, sometimes even discouraging, but always challenging. It was anamazing privilege - and though Ileft early, I was transformed by myyears at Harvard, the friendships Imade, and the ideas I worked on.

The magical thing about thisnetwork is not just that it collapsesdistance and makes everyone yourneighbor. It also dramaticallyincreases the number of brilliantminds we can have workingtogether on the same problem- and that scales up the rate ofinnovation to a staggering degree.

At the same time, for every person inthe world who has access to this technology, five people dont. That means many creativeminds are left out of this discussion - smartpeople with practical intelligence and relevantexperience who dont have the technology tohone their talents or contribute their ideas tothe world.

We need as many people as possible to have access to this technology, because these advances are triggering a revolution in what human beingscan do for one another. They are making it possible not just for nationalgovernments, but for universities, corporations, smaller organizations, andeven individuals to see problems, see approaches, and measure the impactof their efforts to address the hunger, poverty, and desperation GeorgeMarshall spoke of 60 years ago.

Members of the Harvard Family: Here in the Yard is one of the greatcollections of intellectual talent in the world.

In line with the promise of this age, I want to exhort each of thegraduates here to take on an issue - a complex problem, a deep inequity, and become a specialist on it. If you make it the focus of your career, thatwould be phenomenal. But you dont have to do that to make an impact. For a few hours every week, you can use the growing power of theInternet to get informed, find others with the same interests, see thebarriers, and find ways to cut through them.

Don,t let complexity stop you. Be activists. Take on the big inequities. It will be oneof the great experiences of your lives.

And I hope you will come back here to Harvard 30 years from now and reflect on whatyou have done with your talent and your energy. I hope you will judge yourselves not on yourprofessional accomplishments alone, but also on how well you have addressed the worldsdeepest inequities … on how well you treated people a world away who have nothing incommon with you but their humanity.

Good luck.

I Am Prepared to Die for My Ideal

[Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela]

February 11, 1990

I have fought against whitedomination, and I have fought against blackdomination. I have cherished the ideal ofa democratic and free society in which allpersons live together in harmony with equalopportunities. It is an ideal which I hope tolive for and to see realized. But if needs be,it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die.

My friends, comrades, and fellowSouth Africans: I greet you all in the nameof peace, democracy, and freedom for all. I stand here before you not as a prophetbut as a humble servant of you, the people. Your tireless and heroic sacrifices have madeit possible for me to be here today. I thereforehave placed the remaining years of my life inyour hands.

Mario Vargas Llosa's A Fish in the Water is a twofold book: a memoir by one of Latin America's most celebrated writers, beginning with his birth in 1936 in Arequipa, Peru; and the story of his organization of the reform movement which culminated in his bid for the Peruvian presidency in 1990. Llosa evokes the experiences which gave rise to his fiction, and describes the social, literary, and political influences that led him to enter the political arena as a crusader for a free-market economy. A deeply absorbing look at how fact becomes fiction and at the formation of a courageous writer with strong political commitments, A Fish in the Water reveals Mario Vargas Llosa as a world figure whose real story is just beginning.
