Going Into Society 走进交际圈(英文版)
Going into Society is a short story written by English author Charles Dickens (1812-1870). It was first published in 1858, a hilarious story with Dickens's masterly story-within-a-story format, about a sideshow and the various characters inhabit it - focused on a circus in London's West End especially a dwarf who seeks to gain property and go into society. Someone sets up a circus in a respectable neighborhood. The main attraction is a dwarf, who belongs to the circus. "He was a un-common small man, he really was. Certainly not so small as he was made out to be, but where IS your Dwarf as is?" One day, he happily wins a lottery that allows him to a prize of a large sum of money. He takes two other members of the circus with him only to discover, all too soon that his money did not last for as long as he liked. When the performers begin mingling with the community's bankers and businessmen, hijinks ensue. The Cheerleaders of Doom (NERDS Book Three)
Matilda "Wheezer" Choi, the asthmatic who can fly and kick butt courtesy of her nanobyte-enhanced inhalers, loves pro wrestling and hates anything "girlie." Maybe that's because she grew up with six brothers—or maybe it's because her home life has become a battle zone in the conflict between her parents. Unfortunately for Wheezer, when a former member of NERDS turned villain gets extensive plastic surgery in order to become a cheerleader, Matilda must swallow her pride to successfully infiltrate the squad. The newest supervillain, Gerdie Baker, assisted by the criminal mastermind Simon, has created a device that opens portals to other worlds, which she and the other cheerleaders have been pillaging. But the alternate realities are starting to get awfully close together, so it's up to Wheezer and the NERDS to stop the cheerleaders before the worlds collide.Moving Target
This is an important and illuminating collection of essays and lectures by the winner of the 1983 Nobel Prize for Literature. William Golding writes about places as diverse as Wiltshire, where he lived for over half a century, Dutch waterways, Delphi, Egypt ancient and modern, and planet Earth herself. Other essays discuss books and ideas, and provide a fascinating background to the appreciate Golding's own writing and imagination. It includes Golding's Nobel Speech. "e;Golding come through this collection as reserved and wary, but delightful...His writing is a joy"e;. (Sunday Times).
