Sylvia's Lovers is an 1863 novel written by Elizabeth Gaskell. The heroine, Sylvia Robson lives happily with her parents on a farm, and is passionately loved by her rather dull Quaker cousin Philip. She, however, falls in love with Charlie Kinraid, a dashing sailor on a whaling vessel, and they become secretly engaged. But Kinraid is forcibly enlisted in the Royal Navy by a press gang. Philip knows pgsk.com of kindness, he does not tell Sylvia of the incident nor deliver her Charlie's parting message. Believing her lover is dead, Sylvia eventually marries Philip. Later, Kinraid reappears, When Sylvia is informed by Kinraid that Philip knew everything, she is pgsk.com leaves her in despair and joins the army under a pseudonym, and ends up fighting in the Napoleonic wars, where he saves Kinraid's life. At last, when Sylvia realizes she is actually in love with Philip, he horribly disfigured by a shipboard explosion, then fatally injured while saving their daughter.
Selected Poems, 1930-1988
It was as a poet that Samuel Beckett launched himself in the little reviews of 1930s Paris, and as a poet that he ended his career. This new selection, from Whoroscope (1930) to 'what is the word' (1988), describes a lifetime's arc of writing. It was as a poet moreover that Beckett made his first breakthrough into writing in French, and the Selected Poems represents work in both languages, including the sequence of brief but highly crafted mirlitonnades, which did so much to usher in the style of his late prose, and come as close as anything he wrote to honouring the ambition to 'bore one hole after another in language, until what lurks behind it - be it something or nothing - begins to seep through.' Also included are several of Beckett's translations from contemporaries - Apollinaire, Eluard, Michaux, Montale - in versions which count among his own poetic achievements. It is edited by David Wheatley.
The Life And Adventures Of Nicholas Nickleby（II） 尼
Nicholas Nickleby (or The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby) is a novel by Charles Dickens. Originally published as a serial from 1838 to 1839, it was Dickens's third novel. Left penniless by the death of his improvident father, young Nicholas Nickleby assumes responsibility for his mother and sister and seeks help from his Scrooge-like Uncle Ralph. Instantly disliking Nicholas, Ralph sends him to teach in a school run by the stupidly sadistic Wackford Squeers. Nicholas decides to escape, taking with him the orphan Smike, one of Squeers's most abused young charges, and the two embark on a series of adventurous encounters with an array of humanity's worst and best—greedy fools, corrupt lechers, cheery innocents, and selfless benefactors. 'Nickleby' marks a new development in a further sense as it is the first of Dickens's romances. When it was published the book was an immediate and complete success and established Dickens's lasting reputation.
